Running Buddy

Happy Happy Tuesday!!

Our dog is one of my best running pals...she always wants to run, never complains, and pushes me to run further. Although she may look like the loving dog she is, she is a bear to run with! She pulls the leash to the point my hand feels like its bleeding, my shoulder is sore from her pulling, my hand feels like its going to snap off, and its a rare occasion if she let's me stop to catch a breath. Now if my husband takes her running, she's on her best behavior...too bad she's stuck running with me for the next year. Maybe I can get her trained to my liking (highly doubt it, but its worth a try).

(She loves her new Christmas Reindeer)

My husband keeps telling me to get a leash designed to run with dogs, but I keep putting it off thinking I can train her with the one we have (a Harley Davidson leash). The leash I've been thinking of:

Ha, ya right! I doubt I would even make it to the sidewalk with my dog if I attempted running with this leash. I've tried a harness with her and she pulls so hard it rubs her skin raw under her belly. I feel like I look every time I go to the pet store, but don't find anything I like.

Those of you dog runners...what kind of leash do you use to run with your furry friend?

  1. Hey Kym, I just discovered your blog through the link on RER and I'm a fellow military significant other (we're not married--yet, haha--but he dragged me with him to Ft. Hood, TX, blech). Anyway, I have a similar problem with my super-strong, super-fast dog, and I use a gentle leader. It loops around the snout and clips to the leash under the chin, so theoretically when they pull it just pulls their head to the side, which they don't like. It definitely works much better for me than a regular collar or any kind of choke chain. Good luck!

    1. Hi Megan! Thanks for stopping by :) I will have to try the gentle leader...I'm willing to try anything about now! What kind of dog do you have? Do you have a blog or email address you can send me? It's always nice to have other military gals to talk with :)

    2. Hey Kym, sorry, just saw this now. I don't have a blog, but you can absolutely e-mail me at megan.elizabeth.dawson at gmail. I'm still fairly new to the whole military thing, so it would be awesome to get some advice from someone who's been around the block :-). My dog is a lab/border collie mix...maybe. We got her from a shelter and she was a stray, so we don't really know for sure, but I do know that she's 38 pounds of solid muscle and pulls me up hills without even breaking into a pant! Your dog is adorable by the way. And congrats on your marathon!

  2. Hey Kym - I just linked through to you from RER and saw this post about your dog! I also had to run using the gentle leader with my dog for a while - he pulled so hard that he yanked me off the side of the road and fractured my foot! He also had difficulty with the standard harness with the clip in the back and would rub himself raw :( After a few months with the gentle leader (which he hated, but would tolerate as long as we were moving) we switched back to just his regular collar, but he has learned to stop pulling (for the most part :). There are also gentle harnesses (with a clip in the front) that pull the front legs back if they try to pull, which prevents them from pulling as much too. I went to a local pet store and had them test out a few different kinds of harnesses before buying one. That's what I would recommend!

    1. Thank you so much...now I'm definitely persuaded to try the gentle leader! I've had such a rough time getting her to run with me in a way that doesn't immediately make me regret taking her. I love taking her with me, but just can't stand the constant tug of war with her while trying to run. I've tried so many leashes, I was about to give up. The harness rubbed her raw to the point of her bleeding and the choker does nothing for her. She will pull until she's nearly out of breath...you would think she would get the hint. I will have to try the gentle leader and post an update :)
